Zekura — Confidential Trading Without Compromise
Inspiration
Most decentralized exchanges give users full ownership of their assets, but very little privacy. Every order, every balance, and every strategy is visible on-chain, making advanced trading difficult without exposing valuable information.
We asked ourselves a simple question:
Can we build an exchange where users keep both ownership and privacy?
That question became Zekura.
Our goal was to create a confidential decentralized exchange powered by Midnight that allows users to trade while protecting sensitive trading information without sacrificing transparency where it matters.
What it does
Zekura is a privacy-first decentralized exchange built on Midnight.
It enables users to:
- Submit confidential orders
- Trade without exposing sensitive market data
- Preserve trading strategies from public observation
- Maintain secure and verifiable settlement
Rather than making every piece of information public, Zekura only reveals what is necessary while keeping confidential data protected throughout the trading lifecycle.
How we built it
The project combines modern frontend technologies with Midnight's confidential execution capabilities.
Frontend
- React
- TypeScript
- Vite
- Tailwind CSS
Backend
- Matching engine
- Order management service
- Real-time order book synchronization
- Settlement pipeline
Blockchain
- Midnight Compact smart contracts
- Confidential state management
- Secure transaction verification
Challenges we ran into
Building a confidential exchange introduced several unique engineering challenges.
Some of the biggest were:
- Designing a reliable order lifecycle
- Synchronizing frontend state with backend execution
- Rehydrating the order book after updates
- Handling settlement safely while preserving confidentiality
- Creating a smooth user experience despite complex cryptographic workflows
Finding the balance between privacy, performance, and usability required multiple iterations of both the smart contracts and the backend architecture.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a fully functional confidential DEX prototype
- Successfully integrated Midnight smart contracts
- Implemented a complete order submission and settlement flow
- Created a polished, modern trading interface
- Demonstrated how confidential DeFi can deliver a familiar user experience
What we learned
This project taught us that privacy is much more than encryption.
Building confidential applications requires rethinking traditional exchange architecture—from state management to user experience and settlement logic.
We also gained valuable experience working with Midnight's development stack and designing systems that remain secure while still feeling intuitive to users.
What's next for Zekura
We're planning to expand Zekura with:
- Advanced order types
- Cross-chain asset support
- Liquidity incentives
- Improved market-making tools
- Portfolio analytics
- Mobile support
- Production-ready security audits
Our vision is to make confidential trading the default experience for decentralized finance.
