Inspiration

The inspiration came from a conversation I had with my girlfriend while having takeout because we had no idea what we could make for dinner and not feeling like going to the store. We wanted a simple yet fun way to decide what we will be eating for dinner for the coming week, so we can fetch everything from a single trip from the store.

What it does

Yumsy helps with the question that comes up every day: “What should we eat tonight?” You set your food preferences, how many people you’re cooking for, and how much time you have. Then you swipe through recipes and pick seven dinners for the week. Yumsy puts them into a weekly plan and brings the ingredients together in one grocery list. When it’s time to cook, each recipe has step-by-step instructions. You can swap a meal when your plans change and share your plan and grocery list with a partner so you both know what’s for dinner and what still needs buying. The idea is simple: spend less time deciding what to cook and make it easier to get dinner on the table.

How we built it

I built the project step by step, iterating through many different versions along the way. I started with the first building block: the recommendation engine and swipe behavior. First, I focused on making everything work properly, then I shifted my attention to making it look good.

What we learned

We learned that building a solution to your own problem is a much better approach then building a solution that you think people need.

This is only the beginning for Yumsy, I will make Yumsy the best app in it's space.
