Inspiration
Inspired by games like Space Team and our love of music hardware and physical control surfaces.
What it does
Sonic Escape puts you in the basement of a Space Station, in serious need of repair! You solve small mini-challenges using only your hands, to fix up parts of the ship.
How we built it
We built it using Unity, working remotely across the UK. The Space Station and items were modelled using Blender. Audio came from the synths we love and Logic Pro.
Challenges we ran into
Making the hand interactions feel good and natural. We're all macOS developers, which meant that the test iteration cycle was slower, due to the lack of Live Link in Unity.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Natural interactions of all scales - from microgestures all the way up to whole arm movement! The Microgesture Ring, which is used for navigation and messaging to the user. The Space Station environment itself - created completely from scratch!
What we learned
This was our first XR game and we gained a lot of familiarity with the Meta XR Interaction SDK. We have a much better understanding of the Meta hand-tracking system.
What's next for Sonic Escape
The goal is to flesh out the puzzles and make it have a wider variety of playable parts, such as musical instruments.
