Massive food waste, food surplus, and food insecurity in the US combined with corruption in SNAP and EBT programs.
What it does
YumToken uses matching to piggyback off of an established government program (SNAP), which will kickstart a targeted currency and concentrate spending into local, sustainable businesses in three ways:
- Encourage a greater percentage of SNAP benefits spent into farmers markets instead of Walmart & Co
- More publicity, community involvement, and fighting stigma - can result in greater enrollment in SNAP program overall
- Acts as a local currency/loyalty program which accepts independent funding, gradually gains value with circulation, and eventually may mimic many aspects of a universal basic income
