Inspiration

As freshmen in college about to move from the UTD dorms into on-campus university housing, we think a lot about what it'll be like to cook our own meals and face life without a meal plan. So we thought, how nice would it be if we had an AI generate our recipes for us?

What it does

Yummers takes in your preferences (such as preferred calorie intake, grams of protein, allergies, and preferred ingredients) and whips together a fresh new recipe hitting all of your requirements with the help of Sammy, our AI cook!

How we built it

We used Figma for the website prototype and Webflow for the website implementation, working mainly in HTML and JavaScript to bring our creation to life. We used OpenAI's GPT-3.5 Turbo API to generate recipes.

Challenges we ran into

Learning to implement API calls within JavaScript was difficult, and reconciling the fact that Webflow was unable to use Python was also a challenge. We also ran into issues transferring our Figma prototype into Webflow, along with making our website behave how we wanted it to.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're really happy that we got the API to work (after hours of trial and error). We're also satisfied with the prototype of the website!

What we learned

We learned what our preferred website building methods were (aka what not to use next time) and how to implement OpenAI's API in a helpful context that could be used for people like us who wanted to spend less time thinking about what to eat for dinner and more time with the people we love :)

What's next for Yummers!

The prototype includes blog posts (to read when you're waiting for your sauce to simmer down), popular recipes generated via recording user interaction and stars, and several options in the options tab so you can browse through recipes of whatever cuisine you desire. Another thing we thought would be cool was if the user could collect recipes for the week, and then Sammy could collect the ingredients and compile them into one grocery list for you to take to the store! We'd like to build a fully functioning website with all of these capabilities so that we can bring the vision of Yummers, the website that combines functionality and fun, to its full potential.
