Inspiration

After much discussion, our team realized that, gender roles is a real thing. More often than not, girls are forced into studying things like fashion-designing, home sciences etc., because this is what suits women, according to the society and we can not imagine a women being an electrician or a carpenter etc. even if it is more paying job than a housekeeping job. In fact our thinking is so conditioned that we ourselves, never even considered other vocational courses for such jobs as an option.

We were lucky enough to be allowed to study science and engineering(still have a long way to go) but it made us think, why does this demarcation even exist? It had to do with the thinking of the people in the society.

A comparison to be made, average salary of a housekeeper in India, is less than a dollar per hour while for an electrician it is at 1.5$, not to mention how physically draining housekeeping is. This clearly shows the importance of being skilled.

But girls aren't encouraged to pursue in careers in traditional male jobs.

In order to address this issue,we present to you Yukti.

What it does

Through Yukti we aim to normalize seeing women skilled in various job-profiles. User can take a career test, and on the basis of their responses, we shall choose the courses suited to the best of their interests. A list of courses happening around their area would also be available so that they don't miss out. Users can then join courses conducted by us.

A reason why girls don't pursue career in such fields is because of the fear of being judged. So we are going to provide them this platform, with vocational courses exclusively for girls so that they can study without this fear.

At times, one might lack resources like books and electronic devices (much of a necessity these days for online classes), but one shouldn't miss out on opportunities just because of this. So we are also providing benevolent donors a chance, to help girls and women from all walks of life. They can fill out forms and contact us by telling what they can donate, logistics can be figured and a lot of girls can be helped. Girls who need resources can also contact us so that we can help them out.

Challenges we ran into

We spent hours in thinking what our idea should be and how we can implement it. And obviously we had to work in the given frame of time so we had to rush things. (4 hands coding is not a lot of hands)

How we built it

  1. Frontend by using HTML, CSS, Javascript.

  2. Backend by using firebase.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a working prototype of our idea.

What's next for Yukti

We would like to think about the logistics for the donation system so that girls who need resources can be helped quickly.

Fun Fact about Yukti

We chose the name "Yukti" because it is a popular Sanskrit female name which means "skill, expertise or proficiency" and this described our goals perfectly, because we also want girls to be what they want to be and believe that they are capable of doing anything.
