Inspiration
YouVee is an innovative IoT wearable device specifically designed to help visually-impaired individuals mitigate the risks of harmful UV light exposure, which is known to cause skin problems and serious health conditions. Our mission is to create a positive change in the beauty industry by ensuring that everyone has access to products tailored to their unique needs.
By leveraging the power of state of the art sensors and NFC technology, YouVee aims to revolutionize the way people stay protected from the sun and make informed choices about their skin care. Together, we can create a more inclusive and accessible beauty industry for all.
What it does
Real-time UV Monitoring and alerts Equipped with a UV sensor that also functions as a skin tone sensor, YouVee provides real-time information about the user's UV exposure. YouVee is designed to keep users safe and informed when they spend time in the sun. If the device detects excessive UV exposure, it will alert the user by vibrating for 3 seconds, ensuring they take the necessary precautions to protect their skin. Easy and accessible product identification for NFC enabled beauty products The true innovation behind YouVee lies in its seamless integration with embedded NFC tags in beauty products. By utilizing NFC technology, YouVee revolutionizes the way visually-impaired users identify and select suitable products. Simply place your YouVee bracelet next to a product, and the device will let you know if it's right for you by vibrating twice. While NFC tags are not widely used in the beauty industry, we strongly believe that they have the potential to become a game changer in terms of accessibility.
How we built it
The story of YouVee's creation is a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and the unwavering belief that everyone deserves access to products that cater to their unique needs. Thanks to innovation in the electronics manufacturing sector, hardware hacking is more accessible than ever. Coming up with the functionality was rather trivial, yet we quickly discovered how much more goes into the design of smart wearables. It was a great opportunity to brush up on low-level programming.
Challenges we ran into
- code complexity
- finding parts (the semiconductor shortage is not over, sadly)
- complex mechanical design that is inclusive
- learning about the intricacies of accessible design in hardware and software
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are overjoyed that we have a working prototype that works!
What we learned
We learned how to use tools Sketch / Figma/ Adobe Premiere and have gained a deep appreciation for the work of UX /UI designers and the groundbreaking work they do. As a developer, I had to get out of my comfort zone and learn how to design a product from scratch. This has been a refreshing experience which allowed me to reflect upon the role of design in addressing the many challenges faced by differently abled individuals.
What's next for YouVee
While YouVee does not need an app to work, we think that a companion app would be a nice enhancement which would allow users to opt for more personalized shopping experiences / data visualization. We do have a companion app but that is very much a work in progress- design is just as important as functionality and we'll continue to make the companion app more accessible.
