Inspiration
Most people watch educational YouTube videos, university lectures, and tutorials passively. Research in cognitive science shows that within 24 hours, viewers forget over 70% of what they watch (the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve). Passive watching creates the illusion of competence, but active recall and spaced repetition are what actually build long-term retention.
We built YouTube to Quiz AI (VideoToQuiz AI) to bridge this gap: turning any YouTube lecture, course, or explainer video into interactive multiple-choice tests, fill-in-the-blank challenges, and downloadable Anki/Quizlet flashcard decks in seconds.
What it does
- Instant Video-to-Quiz: Paste any YouTube URL or search query, and our AI pipeline transcribes the audio, extracts core knowledge concepts, and generates structured quizzes with verified explanations.
- Active Recall & Spaced Repetition: Converts video keynotes directly into Anki (.apkg / .csv) and Quizlet-compatible flashcard decks.
- Multiple Challenge Modes: Supports Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), True/False, and Fill-in-the-Blanks with precise video timestamps linking back to the exact lecture segment.
- Multi-Language Support: Works seamlessly across lectures in English, Spanish, German, Japanese, Chinese, and 40+ other languages.
- Instant Cloud Sync: Practice directly in the browser with interactive feedback, score tracking, and progress metrics.
How we built it
- Frontend & SSR: Next.js 15 (App Router), React 19, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS for blazing-fast server-side rendering and interactive quiz interfaces.
- AI Core: Advanced LLM extraction pipelines with zero-hallucination prompt architecture, enforcing strict factual grounding against video subtitles and transcripts.
- Video Processing: YouTube Transcript API integrations and semantic chunking algorithms to preserve pedagogical context.
- Global Edge Delivery: Deployed on Cloudflare and Vercel edge networks for sub-second global latency.
Challenges we ran into
Extracting high-quality quiz items from hour-long lectures required fine-grained semantic chunking. Naive summaries often produced trivial questions. We engineered pedagogical constraint prompts that identify central arguments, causal relationships, and key definitions rather than surface-level facts.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Delivering a full quiz and study deck within 15 seconds of pasting a YouTube link.
- Clean Anki deck export that students can import into their desktop or mobile study routines with one click.
- 100% free starter experience with 20 complimentary credits for students and lifelong learners worldwide.
What we learned
Active learning turns passive content consumption into mastery. The feedback loop between immediate quizzing and spaced repetition produces dramatically higher retention rates compared to taking notes or re-watching videos.
