Inspiration
The goal of the YouTube algorithm is to make the site “sticky”—to recommend videos that keep users at bay so that they can watch more videos. However, the explicit data such as sharing or comments does not indicate whether or not a user truly enjoyed watching. Implicit data such as watch time also does not indicate whether or not a user liked a video. We're on a mission to give users a say in their browsing sessions and help them make consciously better decision that'll improve their mental wellbeing.
What it does
This product helps a user become consciously aware of their browsing habits and enforces positive decision making, which long term betters mental health. It delivers a gamified experience that promotes conscious positive decisions & rewards users for taking these actions.
How we built it
We built a chrome extension using HTML, CSS, & Javascript that implemented our Figma design and connected to our ML model.
Challenges we ran into
There was a challenge implementing the live chat feature and incorporating implicit information into our ML model.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We implemented our entire front end!
What we learned
We learned how to create a chrome extension & the psychology behind decision making. We implemented promotion behaviors, as well as prevention behaviors into the product
What's next for youtube-smart-choice
The social features will enable real time instant connections with other users that are watching the same video at the same time. Users will no longer feel that they're alone on their behavioral journey; new friendships, business partners or relationships can spawn. Users can also invite a friend to browse together, which will earn double points After this product succeeds as a chrome extension, there's room to create similar lines of products for other social, e-commerce or streaming platforms. We want to create a world where a user has the control to make the best positive decision for themselves and are not fed simply what the algorithm dictates.
