Inspiration

The Bronx is full of untapped youth potential, but many young people lack access to mentors, guidance, and digital learning resources. We wanted to create a platform that empowers Bronx youth to connect with mentors, build real-world skills, and access local opportunities — all in one inclusive and motivating space. That’s how YouthRise was born.

🚀 What it does YouthRise is a web/mobile platform that:

Matches young users with mentors based on their interests

Offers curated learning tracks in tech, finance, arts, and more

Shares local events and opportunities like internships, workshops, and scholarships

Encourages engagement with badges, streaks, and a community project wall

It’s designed to support Bronx youth in building confidence, connections, and career-ready skills — from the neighborhood, for the neighborhood.

🛠️ How we built it Frontend: React.js (Next.js) with Tailwind CSS for a responsive UI

Backend: Node.js + Express.js API

Database: MongoDB Atlas to store users, mentors, content, and progress

Authentication: Firebase Auth for secure login

Extras:

Mapbox API for event locations

Twilio for SMS reminders

NYC Open Data for real-world resources

We used GitHub for version control and Figma for wireframing and UI design.

🧱 Challenges we ran into Designing a UI that appeals to teens while remaining accessible for mentors and admins

Creating a smart matching system for mentors without complex AI

Integrating NYC-specific data sources in a useful way

Managing multiple user roles (youth, mentors, organizers) within one app

🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of Building a working prototype with full user flows in under 48 hours

Successfully integrating mentor matching and gamified progress tracking

Designing an inclusive, community-first platform with real social impact

Making something we’d be proud to share with Bronx schools and nonprofits

📚 What we learned How to create systems that empower—not overwhelm—first-time tech users

The power of open data and local APIs in solving hyperlocal problems

Best practices for building youth-focused digital platforms with real value

Effective collaboration under pressure and time constraints

🔮 What's next for YouthRise 🧠 Add AI-driven personalized learning paths and mentor suggestions

📱 Launch a mobile app version using React Native
