Inspiration
An app designed to connect high school students with volunteer opportunities tailored to their interests and career goals taps into several crucial needs. It facilitates skill development by allowing students to engage in activities that refine their abilities in real-world contexts. This is particularly valuable as these experiences can enhance their college applications and provide them with competitive edges. Moreover, by promoting community engagement, the app helps foster a sense of civic responsibility among the youth, encouraging them to contribute positively to their local areas. It also offers personal fulfillment and satisfaction from helping others and working towards meaningful goals. Additionally, the networking opportunities it provides can open doors to future career paths and friendships, making it an invaluable tool for students eager to explore and grow.
What it does
Recognizing a gap in our community—students struggling to find relevant extracurricular activities—our team crafted 'YouthConnect' to bridge this divide. The app features five main sections: Connect, Calendar, Home, Goals, and Profile. In the Home section, users are greeted with a dashboard displaying upcoming opportunities and a personalized to-do list of engagements. The Connect section facilitates communication with mentors and peers, enhancing community bonds. The Calendar integrates seamlessly into users' schedules, logging completed activities directly into their resumes, while the Goals section allows for the setting of both short and long-term objectives. Lastly, the Profile section hosts personalized surveys to tailor the app's recommendations, ensuring each student receives the most relevant matches. 'YouthConnect' not only helps students manage their schedules but acts as a personal assistant and career advisor, fostering skills in organization, goal-setting, and critical thinking. As we continue to develop and refine 'YouthConnect', our aim is to expand its features to include more precise matching and virtual opportunities for users who need more flexible arrangements, making our app a crucial gateway to future careers and a cornerstone for building a supportive educational community.
How we built it
Our team used VS coding studio that incorporated react native and expo as the wrapper to the react native. We also used our prior knowledge of block coding, java, and other web developing codes to get started.
Challenges we ran into
We faced challenges, especially in the coding phase of the app. Overcoming these obstacles taught us invaluable lessons in persistence and problem-solving, skills that will undoubtedly aid us in any future tech endeavors. We have also benefited by learning how important teamwork is and if one person were to not corporate then the whole project could get messed up
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team is proud of meeting consistently and keeping all members on task to ensure the best version of our app.
What we learned
Throughout the development of 'YouthConnect', we learned the importance of continuous user feedback in shaping a more intuitive and functional application, demonstrating the critical role of adaptability and user-centered design in technology development. Our experience also underscored the significance of effective teamwork and diverse skill sets, as collaborative problem-solving led to innovative solutions and a more robust final product. Finally, tackling the technical challenges of app development taught us valuable lessons in persistence, coding, and the practical application of theoretical knowledge, enhancing our problem-solving capabilities.
What's next for Youth Connect
With Youth Connect the possibilities are endless, our team hopes to expand to other schools and communities.
