Inspiration
I'm not a conventional thumbnail designer. In fact, I don't even know how to use Photoshop.
My journey started in June 2026, after GPT Image 2 launched. I began experimenting with it, creating fun images just to explore what was possible. I never expected those experiments to turn into something serious.
Then something unexpected happened: I earned INR 2,000 from an image generated entirely by GPT Image 2.
That experience changed how I saw AI. I realized that someone without traditional design skills could create something valuable using the right AI tools. But I also realized that getting great results shouldn't require people to figure out complicated prompts, understand design software, or spend hours learning a technical workflow.
What if anyone could turn an idea into a great thumbnail, even without knowing Photoshop or having a design background?
That question became the starting point for YourThumb.
What it does
YourThumb is an AI-powered YouTube thumbnail studio designed to make thumbnail creation easier for everyone. Instead of starting with a blank canvas and figuring everything out alone, users can describe their video, develop a creative direction, define the visual style, and generate a thumbnail through a guided workflow.
It combines AI-powered creative planning with image generation, helping users move from an idea to a visual result. With Canva integration, users can also take their generated thumbnails into Canva and edit every individual element on them using magic layers.
How I built it
I built YourThumb around a simple belief: people shouldn't need to master complicated design software to bring their creative ideas to life.
Using Next.js, React, TypeScript, OpenAI models, and Supabase, I developed a platform that goes beyond a basic image-generation prompt. It guides users through the creative process, from understanding their video idea to planning and generating the visual.
As the project evolved, I worked on authentication, asset management, asynchronous processing, a credit system, payment integrations, and Canva connectivity. Each part brought its own challenges in making the experience work as a complete product.
Challenges and learnings
One of the biggest challenges was realizing that generating an image and creating a compelling YouTube thumbnail are two different things. A good result needs a clear idea, deliberate composition, and the right visual focus.
I focused on breaking the process into stages so the AI could plan the visual direction before generating the image. Building the surrounding infrastructure also taught me that a useful AI product needs more than a powerful model — it needs a reliable and intuitive experience.
What's next
I want to make YourThumb accessible to even more people, especially those who have creative ideas but lack the design skills or tools to execute them.
YourThumb started because I discovered what AI could help me create without knowing Photoshop. Now, I'm building the tool I wish everyone had: a way to turn an idea into a thumbnail without needing to become a designer first.
