Inspiration
Inspiration areas/ideas include: -Education: Wearable device/ desktop app which sends notifications to take study breaks for higher productivity, maybe motion sensors
-Health & Well-being: Vibration sensors for shaking hands; focus on old people/physically challenged people; motion sensing; mice-detecting
-Sustainability: CO2 emission stuff; gas-leak detection; water-leak detection; sound-sensor; lights; temperature rise +buzzer; light+motion sensing; high temp → turn on AC; trash level detection Wanted to
What it does
-Detect level of trash in a trashcan -Measure frequency of trash input
-Show level and frequency of trash recycling on web server from UC campuses
How I built it
We utilized the Design Thinking approach to decide the idea and finalize prototype.
Step1: Empathize
We were inspired from the hackathon challenge areas and related with the areas. We were responding to the challenge from Northrup Grumman - Model Based System Engineering & IoT
Step 2: Define
Used creative techniques to create a communication hub for 2 or 3 sensors which can be controlled by an application on a central node within one day
Step 3: Ideate
- Study break → Timer? --> discarded
- Trash Can Level of trash Amount of trash Frequency of trash Gamify - competitive recycling/ gamifying / social elements, leaderboard - between friends, UC applications; comparison between trash & recycling; most popular spots on campus/cities
Decided to go with the idea of trash can
Step 4: Prototype
Tried integration sensors - temp, humidity, photoresistor, infrared, motion sensor, light Managed to achieve photoresistors, PIR + led , ultrasounnd sensor 2 approaches: one only with serial monitor; one with hosting to web server
Step 5: Test
Tested with button, photoresistor, PIR, ultrasound and infrared sensors
Challenges I ran into
ESP8266 stopped responding to code 1 Teammate deserted on 2nd day Trouble setting up database
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Achievements -Able to detect trash input based on PIR motion sensor -Able to display if trash can is open/closed based on light intensity from photoresistor -Working on detecting trash level in a can using ultrasound sensor
Proud of -Staying up all night & still having energy to move forward
What I learned
-Integrating sensors -ESP8266 -Java script -node.js
What's next for yourTA
-Alert when recycling is thrown into trash and vice versa -use cameras to detect (type) trash and detect type and amount of waste -Real-time trash level status across UC campuses
