Inspiration

We have always hated dentist appointments. For the past 16 years, they have been asking us the same routine questions: "How many times a day do you brush your teeth?" or "How often do you floss?" It takes an unnecessary amount of time. 'Your Virtual Dental Assistant' can fix that.

What it does

'Your Virtual Dental Assistant' asks the patient a series of questions that the dentist would normally ask. After the patient answers all of the questions, the answers are then submitted to the dentist so they do not have to answer the routine questions, saving an immense amount of time.

How we built it

We wrote the program using Java, and built it in Replit.

Challenges we ran into

We originally wrote all of our code in Python, but unfortunately, it was not working due to the input method not functioning properly. We both have more experience with Java so we decided to move all our code from Python to Java. Another challenge we ran into is when recording our videos, we were two minutes over time so we had to come up with ways to cut down the video length.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we have designed 'Your Virtual Dental Assistant' in a way so you can answer the questions in-depth and the responses to those questions will be rarely if not ever inaccurate/misleading.

What we learned

We realized that we still have a lot to learn in order to develop a full-fledged and functioning project, such as building an app or website to host our program. We also became more comfortable coding in Python, and editing videos. Finally, we learned the overarching functions in React Native, even though we didn't implement them in our project.

What's next for Your Virtual Dental Assistant

In the future, we hope to add a log for patients suffering from maintaining their oral hygiene due to mental health issues. Patients will be able to track how often they brush, floss, etc. We also hope to transform 'Your Virtual Dental Assistant' into an app for increased convenience and so it can be used more effectively nationwide.
