Inspiration

Just a couple of months ago, I started coding in HTML, JS, and CSS. I joined 2 hackathons before and for both of them I used these languages so that I could get comfortable with them. For Git Init, I also chose to do it in these because I have just learned more cool stuff which I wanted to implement. I ALSO love to design so that played a big part in me using HTML, CSS, and JS for this hackathon. OK enough with the backstory. On the day of the opening ceremony, after we got the theme for the Git Init Hackathon by Cal Commit, I thought about what I could make my website about. There were so many options. I personally struggle with OCD and from my perspective, I would want someone to make a website that has many features and I could consider it to be my safe place; so I did just that, hence: "Your Safe Space".

On Replit I used HTML, Javascript and CSS to make my website.

  • There are motivational quotes by famous celebrities and Pinterest so individuals can look at them and try to realize their self worth.
  • There are resources for young adults, older adults and mental health experts
  • There are meditation tips, Self care tips and tips on how one can take care of their mental health
  • If one wants to learn about some common disorders, I made a section for that which includes: ADHD, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, Depression and PTSD.
  • There is also a "fun" section where I made a joke generator to cheer one up on a bad day and some Buzzfeed quizzes that I typically do at 3am in the morning for no particular reason.

There were many challenges I faced but since I like to solve challenges, it was fun! Firstly, I struggled with the nav bar and the toggle effect. On my previous projects I have done a single Nav Bar without any drop down options so this was new for me and harder. I spend 5 hours just on that. BUT WHEN IT WORKED... I WAS LITERALLY SO HAPPY. Anyways, I also struggled with the Javascript part a lot. I was making my Jokes Generator and I kept rerunning it but when I clicked the button, the jokes didn't even show up??? I was so confused like- I double checked everything and it seemed right yet it still didn't work. I was genuinely so frustrated but I later figured out it was the code for the slide before my Joke Generator which had an error that was stopping the following code after it to proceed. But the funny thing is, I didn't even see an error. I had to go to inspect and read through lines and lines of code just to finally find that error.

I am genuinely so proud of myself for actually finishing this website. I genuinely wanted to give up so many times but I kept working through it and it's finally done! + It looks so much better that my past projects. To be honest, I am grateful for this hackathon because if it wasn't for that and the deadline, I would probably have not finished this in my free time and just given up on it- so this was a bit motivation booster, thank you!

I learned so many fun stuff I can do :

  • For example : In HTML, linking another page and it's id so when someone clicks on the dropdown menu and their preferred section, it goes directly to that without having to scroll.

The next step is to sleep. Jk! (not) I want to add more features to make it more interactive, create my own fun quizzes, add more mental health problems that individuals struggle with and get confidence to actually add OCD there too.
