Inspiration
we hope to be considered for environmental and beginner categories.
We thought that food is something many take for granted, and it does have a large impact on our environment. The goal was to help the user visualize what it takes to get the food that they eat.
What it does
You input the food you are curious about and calculates the environmental impacts of that food. (water usage, CO2 emissions, total energy
How we built it
Using HTML and javascript to create the calculator
Challenges we ran into
We began trying to code our project as a web app, with a database, but realized that was far more complex than we were capable of putting together in less than 24 hours. So, we pivoted to creating a site with html and Javascript, but none of us were well versed in this area. Despite that, (and using lots of docs) were able to put together the site. We also ran into the challenge of working with data from relatively large CSV file, and we got through that by breaking it up into arrays.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
despite none of us having experience in javascript or much in html/css, we were able to create a site that calculates the environmental impact of the food you eat. This was also two of our group members first hackathon so we were proud of completing this project as well.
What we learned
We learned a lot, starting with javascript, we learned how to code together using git and github. None of us had ever collaborated with other programmers using git.
