Inspiration

As a long-time dividend investor chasing financial independence, I grew frustrated with disjointed tools for tracking payouts and calculating goals. I wanted a seamless way to monitor my passive income journey—something intuitive that spoke to fellow value investors focused on long-term growth.

What it does

DividendTracker centralizes dividend management: track payout dates, analyze income trends across timeframes, manage reinvestment plans, view growth rates, and calculate exactly how much to invest for target monthly passive income. Every feature is built for investors prioritizing steady, long-term returns.

How we built it

I started by mapping core investor needs—from calendar-based payout tracking to real-time goal calculations. I used React for the UI, Chart.js for visualizing income/growth data, and TailwindCSS for responsive design. All logic (like the goal formula ( \text{Required Investment} = \frac{\text{Target Monthly Income} \times 12}{\text{Average Dividend Yield}} )) was coded client-side for instant results.

Challenges we ran into

Designing smooth tab transitions while rendering complex charts took trial and error—initial lag when switching views broke the seamless experience users expect. Validating extreme input values in the goal calculator also required creative formatting (e.g., $10.5M vs raw numbers) to keep data readable.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Crafting a UI that prioritizes readability for key financial metrics (large, gold-colored typography for critical numbers) and building instant, lag-free calculations. The app works flawlessly on both mobile and desktop—critical for investors on the go.

What we learned

I deepened my understanding of financial formula implementation in code and how to design for user trust (clean, minimalist visuals for financial data). I also learned to prioritize responsive design early to avoid rework for cross-device compatibility.

What's next for this project

I plan to add support for tracking dividend tax implications, integrate portfolio notes for individual holdings, and build a feature to compare dividend yields across sectors. Eventually, I’ll add exportable income reports for easier financial planning.
