Inspiration

The inspiration for my Amazon Alexa skill "Who Said That" was hearing older people reminisce on past presidents, musicians, athletes, radio & TV personalities, celebrities, artist, and more. As we get older we begin to forget the past and jogging our memory on our old glory days and things you would have to have grown up in our time period to remember is a very special part of a humans life. I wanted to create a skill that could trigger the special feeling of remembering where you were and what you were experiencing when you first laid eyes on a piece of art, heard a song, or even watched a tv show for older audiences.

What it does

Who Said That is an Alexa game skill which plays a quote from a famous figure from the past and ask the user to guest the author of the quote's first name. Each time a user correctly connects a quote to a author, they gain a point and get closer to beating their current round and unlocking more subsequent rounds.

How we built it

This Alexa skill was built primary by reading documentation and watching Alexa developers YouTube videos to understand how to implement persistence, APLA and more into my skill.

Challenges we ran into

I ran into a challenge with adding in-skill purchasing, APL, and also adjusting APLA to re-render each time a user got a question correct or incorrect. Each of these issues took too much time and I decided to postpone for later development.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud of the functionality I have managed to develop such as storing past quotes and persisting these stored quotes so that users constantly get fresh new quotes to guess the author of.

What we learned

I learned a lot about APLA and SSML for Amazon Alexa skills which bring the skills to a new level of fun and interactivity. Whether it be adding emotion or emphasis, I love the capabilities that SSML and APLA add to my skills.

What's next for Who Said That

I plan on adding more advanced APL to my skill using features like 'touchWrapper' next and also adding more APLA and SSML to keep the fun up. I will also be adding new quotes and new rounds periodically to keep the skill fun and engaging without getting stale from the same old quotes.
