Inspiration
Our inspiration for this project was to help bridge the gap between people who are in social isolation. We wanted to create an app that let people meet others like them and help them to get more one on one communication.
What it does
This app matches people together to be pen pals and then lets them send letters to each other.
How we built it
This application was built with ReactJS as the frontend framework, styled with Bootstrap 4 and MaterialUI, and the backend used Django as a framework. We hosted our application on Heroku.
Challenges we ran into
During a hackathon, one huge challenge is always going to be the time limit. Prioritizing the things that absolutely need implementation and things that don’t as much is very difficult. Furthermore, because this is an online hackathon, it means that communication and helping teammates is a bit slower than it would be in person.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re very proud of the progress that we managed to make on the project and the quality that we managed to implement it in with the time we had.
What we learned
During this hackathon we were all able to work on our programming and collaboration skills. We were able to improve our knowledge of React, NodeJS, Django, Bootstrap 4 and Material UI.
What's next for your name
The next steps in building this app would be to create an algorithm that pairs pen pals together and get the back end connected with the front end. These are the last two steps necessary to create the finished product.
