Inspiration
We were inspired because we researched a lot about food banks and realized they wasted a lot because they didn't keep track of expiry dates.
What it does
Our program keeps track of users' foods in a database and notifies them when it is about to expire or has expired. It also keeps track of how many lbs of food the user wastes and tells them how this fits within the USDA's food waste reduction goals.
How we built it
We built this program using Java.
Challenges we ran into
We were originally planning on having an HTML front-end, however, we ran into multiple errors when we tried using Servlets. Therefore, we decided to use a J Option Pane instead for our user input.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating such a beneficial and efficient program in such a short amount of time, even when we had to overcome our issues with Servlets and restart almost 8 hours into the competition.
What we learned
We learned how to use Java Servlets, although we were unable to implement them. We also all learned HTML and CSS for this project, although we were also unable to implement this. Finally, we learned that sometimes the simplest solution is the most effective.
What's next for Your Food Inventory Assistant
Eventually, we are planning to develop our program into something bigger. We primarily want to create an HTML front-end portion, which we were planning on creating originally but could not find an effective solution to implement HTML into Java back end. We also want to eventually configure an email notification system to effectively notify users when their food is about to expire.
