Your Carbon Footprint Calculator

Inspiration

We always try to find projects which revolve around some social issues, everyone is facing. Even in our college (Panipat Institute of Engineering and Technology) in India, we are a part of NSS (National Service Scheme). We heard of Devpost in college and then we are just browsing hackathons and lucky for us found this hackathon and we immediately registered in this.

What it does

So we are beginners in coding so we built a Carbon footprint Calculator for you over 4 key areas: Transportation, Electricity consumption, Waste generation, and Diet. We know that these things highly depend upon the country you live in, that's why we added the top 50 most populous countries as well. So on our tool, you just select your country, select the daily commute, diet, weekly waste, and monthly electricity consumption and it will tell you how much carbon you personally emit in the world both individually in the above 4 key areas and overall as well. You can then check what's your country's per capita emission and then you can take measures.

How we built it

We built this using Python logic and its wonderful open-source framework that turns data scripts into web apps.

Challenges we ran into

Finding the proper and up-to-date emission factors for each country was our biggest challenge because we ultimately found them using UNFCCC.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we are even trying to do something for the world even at the minimum of the steps possible and we think that could make a huge difference if that would turn a norm in society.

What we learned

This is the first time I've even heard of Streamlit so I learned about that, while researching about the project I come to know that there are UN bodies specifies in climate like UNFCCC and I also come to know about various websites and people in this process over the internet.

What's next for Your Carbon Footprint Calculator

This is a very simple carbon footprint calculator so we'd like to create a more personalized carbon footprint calculator which considers a lot more key areas, have access to all the country's data and also we'd also like to calculate an even better and nice looking webpage. There could be a lot to do in this which we'll further definitely brainstorm.
