Inspiration
We were inspired by popular task-based apps, such as Duolingo and Mimo, that encourage users to learn new skills. We wanted to take this premise and target activities that people often forget or fail to see the importance of, those that help with mental health. These self-care activities can be auto-generated or user-driven.
What it does
Youniverse is a website that is used by people to prioritize mental health. This utilizes daily reminders and goals to incentivize self care activities. These activities are represented with cartoon planets in order to create a virtual environment that is inviting and makes users want to complete their mental health activities.
How we built it
We built it using HTML code and CSS code. Our main text editor was Visual Studio Code. We used GitHub as our main form of collaboration. We also used Discord to easily send high-quality artwork to implement into our code. To make the artwork, we used the iPad IOS app ProCreate and created our own brush to get a really personalized pixelized effect.
Challenges we ran into
When we originally started, we wanted to create an app. While exploring this option, we spent copious hours using Flutter software and could not grasp it in this limited time. To effectively produce a product to our wanted quality, we decided to switch over to an HTML and CSS-based project. One of the challenges we ran into here was learning exactly how GitHub worked alongside Visual Studio Code. Another challenge we encountered was learning how to create the personalized brush on ProCreate. Another challenge was understanding the pixel difference in images when coming from an iPad to a desktop window. Another challenge we encountered was not being able to get the domain to connect to our project and work properly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Completing the website to our desired outcome in half the time due to our earlier Flutter struggles. Making a very aesthetically pleasing website that works effectively with plenty of room to expand and improve in the future. Making the images into buttons.
What we learned
We learned that Flutter is a very impressive software, but hard to conquer in a single 24-hour time limit. We learned how to adapt and shift quickly to best produce the outcome wanted. Two of our members came in with no GitHub knowledge and learned how to use it effectively. One of our members learned how to use new features on ProCreate and how to effectively implement images into code. One of our members learned HTML and CSS.
What's next for Youniverse
In the future, we would like to use time and date data in order to keep track of user progress on their self care journey. We would use this to show the streaks of days in-a-row to incentivise more usage of the app and better self care. We would also give the users an option of personalizing their self care activities. This would be important so that everyone could get the most out of their self care routines.
