Inspiration

When I was first in a dreary 4th grade classroom, doing my boring paper homework, I longed for a more exciting and interesting way to review the lessons taught in class. Instead of long worksheets, I wished for something more lively, something that could bring the review to me without having to hold a pencil and paper for hours.

What it does

Using the California Education Standards, it quizzes students with hundreds of questions in a variety of subjects, with small gamified boss fights every 10 levels. Using these mechanics, it provides a fun and innovative way to retain knowledge outside of the classroom.

How we built it

Using Typescript for the backend, HTML/CSS/JS for the frontend, and SQLite for the database, we incorporated multiple programming languages and their strengths into the website to create a efficient, complex tech stack.

Challenges we ran into

We often ran into the challenge of integrating the back and the frontend, but we managed to resolve it by consolidating variables to be passed back and forth, and then connecting it all with Vercel.com.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of the many different integrations, from Turso for the database, Vercel for the hosting, to Firebase for the Authentication/Login, that we connected to the app. We thought that it would be hard to connect so many apps and integrate them cleanly into the system, but with the assistance of Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex, we were able to do so.

What we learned

We learned about the importance of keeping track of To-Dos across many people and hours, and about the importance of integration, as well as its difficulty.

What's next for Young Learners 4

We plan to expand the question set into higher grades, as well as creating more quest support for a much more gamified experience.
