Inspiration

Cord-cutters in Brazil face two problems simultaneously — high subscription costs and limited mobile data. We wanted to find out whether AV1 codec adoption on budget Android TV hardware could solve both problems at once.

How I built it We conducted sustained 4K AV1

streaming tests across three Android TV chipsets in April 2026:

  • Amlogic S928X (Ugoos AM8 Pro)
  • MediaTek MT8695 (Fire TV Stick 4K Max)
  • Amlogic S905X4 (Walmart Onn 4K Pro)

Each device streamed AV1 content continuously for 180 minutes at 28 degrees Celsius ambient temperature on a 50 Mbps connection. Temperature was recorded every 15 minutes using an infrared thermometer.

Results were published as free guides at youcinez.com — covering device setup, DNS configuration, cache management, and live sports streaming optimization.

Challenges I ran into The Vega OS transition on new Fire TV

Stick HD models blocks APK sideloading entirely. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max on Fire OS 8 is now the last confirmed model supporting both AV1 hardware decode and full sideload capability simultaneously.

Thermal throttling on the S905X4 caused 20.3 percent frame drops after 90 minutes — making it unsuitable for sustained streaming sessions despite passing short benchmark tests.

What I learned Chipset generation matters more

than RAM for sustained streaming stability. The Amlogic S928X maintained 52 degrees Celsius after 3 hours of continuous 4K AV1 streaming — 16 degrees cooler than the S905X4 under identical conditions despite similar RAM. AV1 reduces data consumption by approximately 34 percent compared to H.264 at equivalent quality on hardware decode capable devices. For a user on a 10GB monthly plan this extends watchable content from 13 hours to 20 hours at no additional cost.

Results

Device Chipset Temp Frame Drops
Ugoos AM8 Pro S928X 52C 0.02%
Fire TV 4K Max MT8695 58C 0.00%
Onn 4K Pro S905X4 68C 20.3%

YouCinez AV1 Benchmark Platform is now live at youcinez.com

Latest findings from April 2026 device testing:

✅ Amlogic S928X: 52C after 3 hours 4K streaming — zero frame drops

✅ Fire TV Stick 4K Max: 58C after 3 hours — zero frame drops

Amlogic S905X4: 68C after 3 hours — 20.3% frame drops

AV1 reduces data by 34% vs H.264 on hardware decode capable devices.

Live sports HLS latency: 1.4 seconds vs 8-20 seconds on cable.

Vega OS Warning: New Fire TV Stick HD does NOT support APK sideloading. Fire TV Stick 4K Max on Fire OS is the last confirmed model with full support.
