Inspiration
Our 4-year-old sister, who is just beginning to learn English, is struggling to grasp things like the alphabet, as it is her second language. We decided to make this app so that she could more easily and hopefully at a faster rate, learn the English language.
What it does
Totoro University is an app that utilizes games to not only help other children like our sister to enhance their English but also to add some fun into the experience.
How we built it
We built this application through XCode and with Swift.
Challenges we ran into
Because of the fact that swift is completely foreign to both of us, we struggled to write code that would have been MUCH easier to write in languages that we are comfortable in. For example, just writing out the code to make an object move took us at least an hour and a half to figure out.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is our very first time making an iOS app, so just being able to produce something new like this was extremely satisfying for us.
What we learned
We got some understanding of aspects of Swift. We also learned how to navigate XCode. Hopefully, we can learn from all of the mistakes with Swift we went through when making this application so that next time, we will be more knowledgeable about the language.
What's next for Totoro University
Because of time constraints and a limit on our knowledge in Swift, it was difficult to add levels/experience points, which is very common in games. It would add an extra layer of depth (and hopefully be motivation for the kids) if we were to be able to add such an element into the application.
