The Inspiration

Keeping track of car maintenance is a massive pain. You either get alerts you don’t understand, or you forget everything until you’re hit with a $2,000 repair bill because you waited too long. We wanted to build Yosemite Auto to fix that. We wanted a dashboard that tells you exactly what’s wrong, how much it’s going to cost, and where the nearest shop is so you can just get it done.

What it does

Our app lets you easily see what type of maintenance your car should have based on urgency of the maintenance. Examples of signals we show on our app: oil change, tire pressure brake failure

What we Learned

I basically lived inside the Google Maps API documentation for this. I learned that putting a map on a page is easy, but making it actually useful, like handling real-time geolocation and deep-linking directions, complicates it a lot.

How we Built It

We kept the stack lean and focused on performance. Frontend: HTML and CSS with a heavy focus on CSS Grid to keep the dashboard organized. JavaScript: The engine that handles dynamic data rendering and map logic. Maps & Places API: I integrated a smart search system that finds garages within a 5,000 meter radius.
