Yolked is a revolutionary fitness application designed to transform how people approach their fitness journey. Our hackathon submission presents a scientifically-grounded, user-centric platform that addresses the fragmented nature of today's fitness technology landscape. Our vision is to help every individual Break Out of Their Shell and transcend their perceived fitness limitations. The "shell" represents the barriers that confine potential—fear of trying new exercises, uncertainty about proper programming, isolation in the gym environment, and self-imposed limitations on what one can achieve. Yolked exists to empower users to shatter the constraints holding them back—whether those are knowledge gaps, social isolation, or plateaued progress. By creating an ecosystem that combines scientific workout programming with meaningful social connections, we enable users to push beyond what they thought possible and evolve into stronger, more confident versions of themselves.

Inspiration

The concept for Yolked emerged from a personal pain point experienced in a gym. Our team lead observed the fragmentation and isolation in the fitness world firsthand, trouble planning workouts, questioning workout effectiveness, and noticing how even in crowded gyms, most people trained alone without the benefit of compatible workout partners. This observation sparked an idea: to create a comprehensive fitness solution that would combine scientific workout programming with meaningful social connections.

What makes Yolked truly unique is how our globally diverse team came together. With the initial concept in mind, our lead reached out through Devpost to find passionate collaborators for this hackathon project. The resulting team spans four corners of the world—members from Ohio, Rwanda, the Czech Republic (studying in Minneapolis), and Colombia. Despite our geographic diversity, we discovered a shared passion for fitness technology and universal recognition of the problems we aimed to solve.

Each team member brought unique perspectives and experiences to the project, creating a solution that transcends cultural boundaries and addresses fitness challenges faced globally. Our analysis of the fitness technology landscape revealed several critical gaps after examining leading platforms including MyFitnessPal, Fitbod, Strong, JeFit, Nike Training Club, Future, and others:

  • Segmented Functionality: The market is divided between basic tracking apps ($4.99-$12.99/month), premium coaching services ($29.99-$149/month), and equipment-focused platforms. None successfully integrate comprehensive workout intelligence with social connectivity.

  • Limited Workout Intelligence: Even premium apps offer only rudimentary customization without accounting for exercise science principles like progressive overload and scientific periodization.

  • Superficial Social Features: Existing social components focus on broad activity sharing rather than facilitating meaningful gym connections based on compatibility factors that matter for productive training partnerships.

  • Underutilized Data: Apps collect substantial user data but fail to leverage this information to create useful gym-specific insights or collaborative equipment availability databases.

During workout execution, the Yolked Coach provides dynamic adjustments that enhance the training experience. When equipment becomes unavailable, the system offers intelligent substitutions that maintain the intended training stimulus. Weight recommendations adapt to actual performance, and volume modifications respond to user feedback regarding fatigue and difficulty levels.

This framework delivers personalized recommendations based on user training experience, available equipment, exercise history, and preferences. Our AI engine analyzes user data to suggest exercises aligned with specific fitness objectives like strength, endurance, or mobility.

Our exercise classification system enhances recommendations by categorizing movements by muscle activation patterns, fundamental movement types, technical complexity, equipment requirements, and risk-to-benefit assessments. Users benefit from comprehensive visual learning tools including muscle engagement animations, correct form demonstrations, difficulty variations, and equipment-specific setup instructions.

Discover Feature

The Discover section serves as an educational hub that empowers users to explore new training methods and expand their exercise knowledge. At its core is a curated exercise library featuring an extensive database of movements categorized by targeted muscle groups, allowing users to quickly find exercises that address their specific training needs.

Our Routine Marketplace extends this functionality by offering pre-built workout routines that can be filtered by goal, equipment access, and time constraints. Users can preview these routines with estimated metrics and required equipment information before deciding to use them. Once selected, routines can be customized to fit individual preferences and saved to the user's personal collection. The community rating and review system helps surface the most effective routines, creating a self-improving ecosystem of workout content.

To ensure users always have access to the most relevant and effective training approaches, we highlight Trending Workouts based on multiple factors. These featured routines are selected based on user ratings and completion rates, results reported by users with similar profiles, seasonal relevance and current fitness trends, and compatibility with the user's equipment access and goals. This curated approach to workout discovery helps users find new, effective training methods without overwhelming them with options.

Connect Feature

Yolked's Connect feature transforms the traditionally solitary gym experience into a community-driven journey while maintaining privacy and relevance. By leveraging location data and social connectivity, we've created a powerful system that helps users find workout partners, discover ideal training locations, and build meaningful fitness relationships.

Interactive Gym Map System

At the core of our location functionality is a sophisticated mapping system that provides unparalleled gym connectivity for users worldwide. We've developed a comprehensive gym database that includes extensive mapping of fitness facilities across multiple categories. This database encompasses commercial gym chains with detailed location data, independent and boutique fitness facilities, university and corporate fitness centers, public workout spaces and parks, and even user-contributed home gym locations (which remain private by default).

Users can personalize their gym experience by setting their default "home gym" for regular training, adding multiple regular training locations to their profile as they move between facilities, and temporarily checking in at any facility during travel. This flexibility ensures that the app remains relevant regardless of where the user chooses to train.

One of Yolked's most practical features is its seamless navigation integration with Google Maps. Users can access one-tap Google Maps navigation to selected gyms, view ETA calculations based on their current location, and benefit from route optimization with real-time traffic data. This integration eliminates the friction of switching between multiple apps when planning a gym visit.

The system also includes sophisticated training planning tools that provide location-aware workout scheduling. Workouts are automatically adapted to each gym's equipment profile, alternative exercise suggestions appear when equipment limitations arise, scheduling assistance considers travel time and gym hours, and reminder notifications include travel time buffers to ensure on-time arrival.

User Discovery and Matching

Finding the right training partner can dramatically improve workout consistency, intensity, and enjoyment. Yolked's sophisticated matching algorithm connects compatible training partners based on multiple factors that go far beyond simple location proximity.

Our multi-factor compatibility assessment creates connections that are built to last by considering training goals and program alignment, experience level and performance metrics, schedule compatibility and gym location overlap, preferred training styles and workout duration, and even spotting needs and training partner preferences. This comprehensive approach ensures that users connect with partners who truly enhance their training experience.

We've built our discovery system with a privacy-first approach that gives users complete control over their visibility. Users benefit from granular privacy settings for personal data, opt-in discovery with customizable visibility, an anonymous mode option for private training periods, and robust blocklist management for unwanted connections. This balanced approach ensures users can be discovered by potential training partners while maintaining control over their personal information.

The connection interface itself is designed for streamlined partner discovery with minimal friction. Users can browse proximity-based user cards showing compatibility percentage, filter potential partners by training style, schedule, and goals, view quick profile previews with key training metrics, and send connection requests through a simple system with custom messages. This intuitive design makes finding compatible training partners as easy as finding a new workout.

Location-Based Social Network

Yolked's social features are specifically designed for fitness community building, creating meaningful connections that enhance the training experience rather than serving as a generic social platform.

Our system creates gym-specific virtual communities for each physical location featuring targeted discussion boards for equipment updates, local events, facility tips, and peak time reports. Users can easily connect with others who train at the same facility, making social interactions directly relevant to their actual training environment.

The platform includes fitness-focused messaging tools supporting workout sharing, schedule coordination, quick-response templates, video calls for form checks, and privacy-controlled progress photo sharing. After completing workouts, users can publish their sessions to the community in the Discover section, creating a stream of real-world, user-tested routines for others to browse and adapt.

For partner training, we've developed collaborative tools including shared workout viewing, synchronized timing, respectful performance comparisons, and joint goal setting with accountability features.

Equipment Tracking

Arriving at the gym only to find essential equipment unavailable is a common frustration. Yolked addresses this challenge with an innovative equipment tracking system that creates a comprehensive database of equipment availability across all user locations.

Our collaborative equipment mapping functionality leverages collective user knowledge at each facility. Users can report equipment availability, verify others' reports, note temporary maintenance issues, and provide quality ratings. This crowdsourced approach creates an increasingly accurate picture of each facility's available equipment.

Complementing this community data are personal equipment profiles for individual tracking. Users can manage home gym inventories, tag favorite equipment at commercial gyms, filter workout recommendations based on equipment preferences.

Our workout adaptation engine provides real-time adjustments when plans must change due to equipment unavailability. The system suggests alternative exercises, modifies entire workouts based on available equipment, calculates equivalent stimulus levels for substitutions, and progressively increases equipment requirements as skills develop—ensuring equipment limitations never derail a training session.

Progress Tracking

Effective training requires systematic progression tracked through meaningful metrics. Yolked's comprehensive tracking goes beyond basic weight and rep counting to provide insights that drive motivation and results.

Our holistic measurement system captures multi-dimensional progress across various domains including strength metrics across different movement patterns, volume accumulation by muscle group, work capacity development, and optional body composition tracking.

The visual progress dashboard transforms complex data into intuitive visualizations with performance trend graphs, progress heatmaps highlighting strengths and development areas, achievement milestones, and training cycle comparisons.

Our contextual analytics provide intelligent progress interpretation, explaining performance variations by considering fatigue factors, analyzing progress rates, identifying plateaus with targeted suggestions, and optimizing training cycles through recovery pattern recognition.

How We Built It

Development Approach

Yolked.ai's development was guided by a technical strategy balancing innovation with reliability, leveraging modern frameworks while maintaining a cohesive architectural vision.

We employed a design-first methodology using Figma for detailed UI mockups and interactive prototypes before coding. This approach enabled rapid UX iteration, flow testing, and establishment of a consistent design system. Our Figma workspace served as the single source of truth for UI components, colors, typography, and interaction patterns.

We selected Bolt as our foundational React framework for its development acceleration capabilities. Its configuration allowed immediate focus on feature development, while server-side rendering improved initial load performance—critical for gym environments with inconsistent connectivity. Bolt's built-in code splitting optimized bundle sizes, maintaining responsiveness despite sophisticated features like real-time tracking.

Modern tooling including Cursor enhanced our workflow by streamlining navigation and refactoring. We focused on maximizing Bolt's capabilities, particularly its component lifecycle management and state handling for real-time features and data-intensive tracking systems.

Development Philosophy

Supabase provides our data persistence layer, offering robust relational database capabilities, real-time features, and built-in authentication. Our schema employs sophisticated relationship modeling for users, exercises, workouts, and gym locations. Supabase's real-time capabilities enabled collaborative features without requiring separate WebSocket infrastructure.

The OpenAI API powers our workout generation system, creating personalized training programs by translating user profiles and performance data into contextual API calls. We developed custom sanitization pipelines, interpolation mechanisms blending AI recommendations with our exercise classification system, fallback workflows for API disruptions, and caching strategies optimizing token usage.

Google Maps API integration forms the foundation for our Connect features, with Places API supporting our gym database. Our implementation includes custom styling emphasizing fitness locations that matches our brand identity.

Cursor, an AI-powered coding assistant, significantly enhanced development productivity by helping us prototype complex features, troubleshoot integration challenges, and maintain consistent code quality across the codebase.

Challenges We Ran Into

Global Collaboration Challenges

Building Yolked.ai presented unique collaboration challenges as our team members are located in completely different parts of the world, spanning multiple time zones and cultural contexts. This geographic distribution initially created significant coordination hurdles for synchronous communication and consistent project momentum. We had to carefully develop communication protocols that would allow for efficient knowledge transfer despite limited overlap in working hours, such as using Slack for real-time communication and GitHub for code collaboration.

To overcome these challenges, we established a structured asynchronous workflow that included detailed documentation of decisions, comprehensive pull request descriptions, and regular status updates that team members could review when they came online. This approach not only solved our immediate coordination problems but ultimately strengthened our development process by enforcing clarity in communication and thorough documentation.

The diversity of our team proved to be both a challenge and a significant strength. Different cultural approaches to software development, design sensibilities, and communication styles initially required adjustment, but ultimately enriched our product with varied perspectives that a more homogeneous team might have missed. Over time, we developed a unified team culture that preserved individual strengths while creating a cohesive approach to problem-solving.

Project Structure Challenges

One of our most significant early challenges was establishing the initial project structure in a way that would accommodate our ambitious feature set while maintaining code quality and developer productivity. With team members coming from different technical backgrounds and with varying familiarity with our chosen tech stack, we needed a structure that was both robust and intuitive.

The sheer scope of features we envisioned for Yolked created challenges in prioritization and architecture design. We had to resist the temptation to implement everything at once, instead focusing on creating a solid foundation that would support future expansion. This approach required difficult decisions about which features would be part of our initial release and which would be scheduled for future development cycles.

To address these challenges, we invested significant time in upfront architecture planning, creating clear separation between core functionality layers and feature-specific implementations. This modular approach allowed team members to work on different features simultaneously without creating excessive dependencies or conflicts.

Integration Challenges

Building an application with multiple external dependencies created significant integration challenges. Coordinating between Supabase, OpenAI's API, Google Maps services, and our application logic required careful management of data flows and robust error handling.

Our most substantial technical hurdle was designing our Supabase database structure. The complex relationships between exercises, equipment, body parts, users, workouts, and gym locations demanded sophisticated schema design. The exercise classification system was particularly challenging, needing to support multiple overlapping taxonomies while remaining performant for real-time workout generation queries.

We optimized our database through careful planning of relationships, constraints, and indexes to support complex data operations. This required multiple iterations as we refined our understanding of fitness-specific performance needs.
