Inspiration

The inspiration for YoGroStore came from a simple, painful reality I've witnessed growing up in East Africa. Smallholder farmers—the backbone of our food system—often have no idea what fair market prices are for their produce. They're forced to sell to middlemen at whatever price is offered, losing up to 40% of potential income. Meanwhile, businesses like restaurants and supermarkets struggle to find reliable, affordable produce. I remember seeing my brother whose maize was bought for pennies from his farm in Gomba district at a fraction of what this would be bought by a genuine farmer. I realized that technology could bridge this gap—not with complex solutions, but with something simple: giving farmers the information and connections they need to make informed decisions.

YoGroStore was born from that moment. It's my contribution to building a more equitable food system in East Africa—one harvest at a time.

What it does

YoGroStore is a mobile-first platform that connects East African farmers directly with wholesale buyers, eliminating costly middlemen and providing AI-powered price recommendations to ensure fair deals.

For Farmers:

List produce with details like crop, quantity, location, and quality grade

Get instant AI-powered price suggestions based on crop, location, and seasonality

Manage all listings from a simple dashboard

Receive direct buyer inquiries without intermediaries

For Buyers:

Search and filter produce by crop type and location

Browse farmer profiles and listings

Contact farmers directly to negotiate and close purchases

Access reliable, fresh produce at wholesale prices

The AI Magic: When a farmer creates a listing, they click "Get AI Price Suggestion." Our algorithm analyzes crop type, location, and current market data to recommend a fair wholesale price range—empowering farmers to negotiate confidently.

How we built it

We focused on building a polished, functional product that demonstrated the core value proposition.

Tech Stack:

Frontend: React with Vite (for fast development), Tailwind CSS (for beautiful, mobile-first styling), React Router

Backend: Node.js with Express, REST API architecture

Database: PostgreSQL for user and listing data

AI Logic: Rule-based price recommendation engine (simulating ML for the MVP)

Hosting: Frontend on Vercel, Backend on Render

Development Approach:

Phase 1 : Built the backend API with authentication, user models, and listing CRUD operations

Phase 2 : Developed the frontend with login, registration, farmer dashboard, and listing forms

Phase 3 : Integrated AI price suggestion button and buyer search functionality

Phase 4 : Tested, polished UI, and created the video demo

Phase 5 : Deployed, documented, and submitted

Key Design Decisions:

Mobile-first design (critical for East African users who access the web via smartphones)

Clean, earthy color palette (green, warm orange, cream) to feel agricultural and approachable

Simple, intuitive UI that works even for users with limited tech experience

AI feature as a button on the listing form—visible, accessible, and immediately useful

Challenges we ran into

Deployment Stress Vercel and Render deployment always brings surprises—environment variables, build issues, CORS errors. I had to debug these under time pressure, but getting the live demo working was worth it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Working MVP: Built a functional, two-sided marketplace with authentication, CRUD operations, and AI simulation from scratch.

AI Feature That Actually Works: The price suggestion button isn't just a gimmick—it provides meaningful, context-aware recommendations that help farmers.

Mobile-First Design: The app looks and works great on phones, which is where our users will primarily access it.

Successful Deployment: The app is live on Vercel and Render, with a working API and database.

Focus on Real-World Impact: This isn't a toy project—it addresses a genuine, documented problem affecting millions of East African families.

What we learned

Deployment Takes Time (Account for It!) I learned the hard way that deployment is not "the last 5 minutes." Next time, I'll start deployment earlier and account for environment setup, domain configuration, and testing.

What's next for YoGroStore

Real AI Model: Replace the rule-based engine with a machine learning model trained on actual East African market data from sources like the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics or Uganda Bureau of Statistics.

M-Pesa Integration: Enable seamless mobile money payments directly within the platform—critical for East African users who rely on M-Pesa for transactions.

Messaging System: Replace the simple contact display with a real-time chat feature so farmers and buyers can negotiate without sharing personal contact details.

Logistics Integration: Partner with delivery services (like Sendy or Bwabwa) to offer automated produce transport from farm to buyer.

Farmer Verification: Add a verification system (with photos and references) to build trust and reduce fraud.

Financial Inclusion: Partner with microfinance institutions to offer small loans to farmers based on their transaction history on YoGroStore.

Community of Trust: Build ratings, reviews, and reputation scores to create a transparent, trustworthy marketplace.
