Inspiration

With a history of being repeatedly affected by drought, intense rain, cyclones, and the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), El Salvador is recognized for its vulnerability to the adverse effects of climate change.

Unless radical action is taken this could lead to the complete exhaustion of the country’s water resources within 80 years. El Salvador’s economy is reliant on agriculture, most notably coffee, so the lack of water would pose a great threat to this sector and the country’s overall stability.

What it does

Yemca which is an android Things application for smart watering of farmlands to conserve water resources and allow farmers to sell unused resources.

By fitting sensors in the water distribution in a farm, it is easy to find out the data related to water distribution in a farm like humidity, soil moisture and temperature. These sensors can send data to Yemca smart watering app, and the data can be visualized and water distribution controlled.

People can choose to buy water from private companies with Yemca smart green token. Prosumers can sell the excess from their water ration to the marketplace where other farmers purchase the available water.

How we built it

We build it with Android studio using the java and kotlin language.

Challenges we ran into

am still a beginner in Java language for app development. This was the first time we interacted with bitcoin wallet solution for java.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have built our first prototype through the bitcoinBackathon.

What we learned

We’ve gained hands on experience through the workshops and we have seen practical ways to apply smart contracts to solve real world problems.

What's next for Yemca Smat watering app

We are going to be testing Yemca with real users, we will go to different farms to see how farmers will interact with this app and get feedback, we will then proceed to build the main product by considering the feedback we’ve gotten.
