Yelpify

Inspiration

I was inspired by the ease of use of the Yelp AI API and how new and useful it seems.

What it does

This web app requests users connect with Spotify, enable location permissions, and then extracts the music listening data from Spotify API, summarizes it, and passes the summary as a query to Yelp AI API, before displaying the recommended businesses with links, images, rating, etc.

How we built it

The web app was built using React, NextJS, Javascript/Typescript, simple HTML/CSS/TailwindCSS, utilizes the Spotify OAuth and data APIs as well as the Yelp AI API. The web app is hosted on vercel for demonstration purposes.

Challenges we ran into

I wasn't able to get the Yelp API library/sdk working in NodeJS, I kept getting an error about an es5 module not being found even after removing/reinstalling node modules. Workaround: calling the Yelp AI API directly with web requests.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The web app is really easy to use, mobile responsive, minimalist UI/UX, and it's actually useful for people traveling to new places and looking to connect with locals.

What we learned

I learned that Yelp's AI API is much more powerful and useful than I first imagined, and I'm excited to see what others have built with it.

What's next for Yelpify

I want to add other features like connecting other apps such as Apple Music and maybe even Shazzam.
