Inspiration
What inspired me to create the Yelp Business Analytics Dashboard was my own passion for exploring local businesses on Yelp. As an enthusiast of the platform, I saw potential in developing a program that could consolidate information about businesses in one centralized hub for easy access and review. Moreover, I recognized the prospective benefits in leveraging the capabilities of AI to identify key patterns and generate invaluable insights about this data tailored specifically to the user's business needs. This personalized approach would significantly cut down on the hours spent conducting extensive research and analysis, allowing users to channel their time and effort into more productive endeavors. The Coda's AI at Work Challenge presented the perfect opportunity to bring this idea to life!
What it does
This template allows users to enter Yelp listings of their choice to access comprehensive business analytics, explore data-driven insights, and receive an AI-generated competitive analysis report. This multifunctional toolkit enables business owners to analyze their top competitors, gain a competitive edge in their respective markets, and make informed decisions to optimize business operations.
What I learned
Courtesy of this challenge, I was given the exciting opportunity to navigate Coda for the first time! While I initially faced a slight learning curve as I familiarized myself with the various functions, features, and interface, I became adept at utilizing the platform as I immersed myself into the project. Furthermore, I acquainted myself with the functions of each pack I imported, including Yelp, Google Maps, Zip Code Locator, and Address Parser.
How I built it
I began by brainstorming all of the functionalities I envisioned for this template, ensuring that it would cater to the needs of small business owners, aspiring entrepreneurs, and Yelp enthusiasts alike. To extract essential information from Yelp listings such as ratings, review count, and categories, I explored the features of the Yelp pack. After creating the initial repository of data, I integrated the Address Parser pack to parse addresses into separate parts, such as street, city, and zip code. The Zip Code Locator pack then retrieved latitude and longitude coordinates from each zip code, which were passed into Google Map's Search() function to view similar businesses in the area. With the foundation of the main dashboard in place, I focused my attention on drawing data insights and illuminating trends by leveraging chart visualizations and AI-generated summaries. I further incorporated Coda's AI capabilities to generate a dynamic competitive analysis report.
Challenges I ran into
The greatest challenge I encountered was undoubtedly balancing the workload of this project alongside another, as I was determined to deliver two submissions for this hackathon. As the deadline drew near, I made the decision to pull an all-nighter on the final day to ensure that the effort invested into this project was properly showcased in a video presentation. While this undertaking proved itself to be demanding and difficult, it also strengthened my resilience, fostered a sense of accomplishment, and served as a testament to my unwavering dedication toward this project.
What's next for Yelp Business Analytics Dashboard
As a graduate student pursuing Computational Linguistics, I would like to explore the realm of sentiment analysis by extracting customer reviews from the Yelp listings, as this data was not readily available via the Yelp pack. I am eager to expand upon my expertise and further enhance the template's functionality by providing insight on businesses' audience and brand perception.
