Inspiration
I’ve always enjoyed writing quick journal entries, but over time I realized I wasn’t learning much from them. I couldn’t see patterns, changes in mood, or how I felt a year ago today. Yearnal was born from the desire to not just record the present, but to understand the past and reflect on personal growth.
What it does
Yearnal is a personal journaling app that helps you log key aspects of your day in a structured but flexible way. Each entry includes a short comment, ratings for social interaction and food (good/bad), optional details like exercise, meditation, people you met, and inspirational content (quotes, links, music, videos). The standout feature: it shows you what you wrote on the same day in previous years, helping you compare your mindset, mood, and progress over time.
How we built it
Tailwind and React native expo
Challenges we ran into
Uniquely Useful Tool and European Challenge
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Building a fully functional journaling tool that is genuinely helpful Implementing the "on-this-day" memory view — it feels magical Creating a clean, user-friendly interface that encourages consistent use Keeping everything local-first, with no login needed
What we learned
Designing for reflection is different from productivity — it needs emotion, not just data Simple features like "how was your food today?" or "did you meditate?" can become powerful when viewed over time Building a product for yourself is the best way to test real usefulness
