Inspiration
Nepal is a beautiful country with rich cultural heritage, but tourists often face significant hurdles such as language barriers, overpricing, and a lack of accessible historical information. We wanted to build more than just a map; we wanted to create a true travel companion. Inspired by the Nepali words "Yatra" (journey) and "Sathi" (friend), Yatrasathi was born. Our goal is to make every tourist's journey in Nepal safe, immersive, transparent, and unforgettable while protecting them from common travel scams.
What it does
Yatrasathi is an all-in-one smart tourist guide application designed to elevate the travel experience in Nepal. It offers a suite of powerful features:
Smart Passport & Visa Tracker: Tourists can scan their passport upon arrival. The app instantly extracts the data, calculates visa validity, and displays the remaining days allowed in Nepal to prevent overstaying.
Anti-Fraud Pricing Guide: To combat tourist traps, this section provides real-time, fair-market pricing for goods, services, and transportation, ensuring travelers never get overcharged.
AI Guide Vision: A pocket tour guide! Users simply snap a picture of a monument, temple, or landscape, and our AI instantly recognizes the location, providing rich historical context and specific facts about the site.
Real-Time Voice Translation: Breaking the language barrier by allowing tourists to speak in their native tongue, which the app translates directly into Nepali. This makes communicating with locals, vendors, and drivers seamless and natural.
Immersive Exploration: Offers 3D cultural artifacts and VR 360 spatial tours so tourists can preview or deeply explore Nepal's heritage.
Safety & Community: Features a "Travel Buddy" system to connect with fellow explorers and a quick-access Emergency SOS button for immediate assistance.
How we built it
We built the entire frontend and core application logic using Flutter, allowing us to deliver a high-performance, cross-platform experience (iOS and Android) from a single codebase. We heavily leveraged Flutter's rich ecosystem of libraries and packages:
UI/UX: We used Flutter's extensive widget catalog to create a beautiful, intuitive, and responsive interface that feels native on any device.
Hardware Integration: We utilized the camera package for the AI Guide Vision and Passport scanning features, along with audio plugins (like speech_to_text and TTS libraries) to capture and play translated audio seamlessly.
Immersive Media: To bring Nepali culture to life, we integrated specialized Flutter packages to render interactive 3D cultural artifacts and immersive VR 360 spatial tours right on the user's screen.
Backend & AI: We used Flutter's http package to handle asynchronous API calls, connecting our app to powerful cloud-based backends for OCR (Passport scanning), Natural Language Processing (translation), and Vision AI (landmark recognition).
Challenges we ran into
Integrating multiple complex technologies—OCR, AI image recognition, voice translation, and 3D rendering—into a single, lightweight mobile application was a major hurdle. Ensuring the AI Vision model accurately identified specific, niche Nepali historical sites required careful prompting and data handling. Additionally, designing an intuitive UI that isn't overwhelming for a traveler trying to quickly check a price or translate a sentence took several iterations to get right.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
that we're proud ofWe are incredibly proud of seamlessly tying together the AI Vision and the Voice Translation features. Seeing the app successfully identify a Nepali landmark from a simple photo and explain its history is a magical experience. Furthermore, building a functional passport scanner that actually solves the practical problem of visa management proves that our app has real utility beyond just sightseeing.
What we learned
Through building Yatrasathi, we learned a massive amount about API integration, managing asynchronous data in mobile apps, and the intricacies of handling live camera and microphone feeds. More importantly, we learned about user-centric design—specifically how to build an app that acts as a reliable, fast, and trustworthy tool for someone navigating a foreign country.
What's next for YatraSathi - Team Roamers
We have big plans for Yatrasathi! First, we want to implement offline support, as many beautiful trekking routes in Nepal lack reliable internet access. We also plan to expand our 3D artifact library and refine our Travel Buddy matching algorithm. Ultimately, we would love to partner with the Nepal Tourism Board to make Yatrasathi the official companion app for anyone visiting our beautiful country.
