YASMP - Yet Another Social Media Platform

YASMP is a platform for connecting people IN REAL LIFE! Meet new people by posting events that you'd like to do with them, like playing basketball or watching a movie, or sign up one! Easy! Have fun!

Inspiration

Social media is supposed to be SOCIAL right? But it's not. You'd think that people care about you, but all in all, you're just another brick in the wall. No one actually wants to hang out in real life do they? Well, we're here to change that!

What it does

Our app helps connect people IN REAL LIFE. People can post things that they'd want to do, like for example, going downtown to go shopping or playing basketball, but have no one to do it with. Bored on a Sunday, and want to meet new people? Scroll down the events page for a list of events that other people are doing and sign up! Build yourself a social network, IN REAL LIFE.

How we built it

Since our team mainly have experience with Python, we chose to use the Web Framework, Flask, to build our application. Thanawat(the author of this document) have experience with using TailwindCSS, so he used that to style our application.

Challenges we ran into

Basically, none of us knew how to use Flask, and most of our team haven't used any web framework before. Nathan and John needed to learn the basics of a Web Frameworks, REST APIs, and Full Stack Applications. Thanawat, who had the most web application experience, had to attempt to teach the newer members about these concepts, all in less than 36 hours. Due to these challenges, despite the simplicity of the app, it took a us a long time to get all the basic functinality working.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We're glad that we created something, despite being us being beginners. By the end of the hackathon, we have a mostly working Minimum Viable Product that hopefully is presentable enough for the judges.

What I learned

We learned about Web Frameworks, specifically Flask, how to build a Full Stack Application, and project management skills.

What's next for YASMP - Yet Another Social Media Platform

Thanawat has plans of rewriting the application in another web framework: https://ihp.digitallyinduced.com/ , because it's a web framework that greatly interests him.
