Inspiration
I love binge watching but I rarely am able to find shows to binge since we're facing a decline in the production of binge worthy shows. At times like that when I need a show to binge, I call my brother, and he tells me what he is currently watching. Although sometimes he is busy so he can't tell me what show to binge, so I thought what if there was a way to see his thoughts on shows or movies he's watching. What if we can keep yapping about our favorite shows outside of speaking on the phone? That's how I came up with Yappin Entertainment, a chrome extension that lets Netflix members under the same family plan to communicate with one another on the Netflix platform.
What it does
There are two things that it mainly does, the first being for each show under the description. You can find each family member's profile and their rating along with their overall impression of the show by clicking on the member's section. The second thing is when watching a show you can view comments your family members (or friends) left at each time stamp, for a few seconds so its not too distracting from the show (hopefully they aren't the type to spoil). By doing this it's like you're actually with that person and speaking to them about this show or movie you both enjoy watching.
How we built it
I built the chrome extension using only Javascript. I inspected Netflix's page on chrome to see how to place an overlay in the areas in which I wanted to. There was a lot of trial and error between finding ideal spots and formatting the overlay correctly, ensuring it doesn't interfere with Netflix's features.
Challenges we ran into
I never built a chrome extension before to get a gist of it I made another chrome extension before it, but I still did not completely understand. I had to learn as I went by what chrome extensions are allowed to do and what they aren't (i.e., import statements). I also had to fight a lot about how to allow user's to allow comments and view it at certain intervals (i wasnt able to get that part fully up and running unfortunately).
Accomplishments that we're proud of
While I couldn't achieve the second part fully, I am proud of the fact that I made an extension and that I can see other family members ratings and thoughts on specific shows and movies.
What we learned
I learned how trees are applied in web development and how to build a chrome extension app.
What's next for Yappin Entertainment
Up next is finding out how to make comments appear correctly in a twitch like fashion.
