Inspiration
I got my inspiration from a pain point I actually have. I use a planner, but sometimes I just wish I could take what’s in my head and drop it straight onto the page. That’s when the idea for Yap-2-Do was born.
What it does
Yap-2-Do is a voice-powered to-do list app.
Instead of typing, you tap a button, speak a thought like “finish history essay,” and it gets added to your task list. It’s quick, simple, and helps you stay focused without having to stop and write things down.
How I built it
I built the app using Expo and React Native, which made it easier to test and iterate on mobile. For the voice-to-text part, I used OpenAI’s API to transcribe what you say into written text. Then I used GPT-4.1 to help turn those thoughts into structured tasks you can check off.
Challenges I ran into
This was my very first time coding in React and working in mobile development, so yes—I ran into a lot of issues. From setting up the project all the way to deployment, there wasn't a single part that didn’t hit me with bugs. But I kept going.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Honestly? I'm proud I submitted something at all.
At the start of the hackathon, I wasn’t even sure I could finish this project. I was new to React Native, new to app development, and full of doubt. But I pushed through, figured things out along the way, and I’m proud of what I created.
What I learned
Beyond learning React Native and mobile development, I learned how to push through self-doubt, debug under pressure, and keep building even when everything felt broken. I’m walking away not just with new skills, but with more confidence in what I can figure out when I stick with it.
What's next for Yap-2-Do
Funny enough, I have a to-do list for Yap-2-Do itself.
Even if I don’t win, I plan to keep building. I want to add authentication, more features for students (like a personalized AI tutor that connects to your planner), a calendar view to help visualize deadlines, and Google Calendar integration. Oh—and dark mode. Always dark mode.
I’m excited to keep learning, and to keep making Yap-2-Do better.
