Inspiration
Our inspiration for this web extension/app is seeing a product online and not feeling confident that it is the best possible price, quality, and has a trustworthy vendor that I can buy from happily in the future.
What it does
Smart Shopper™ scans any product page online with visual AI matching technology. Then it scrapes the web (including online markets like Amazon, Etsy, Alibaba, AliExpress, Temu as well as social platforms like Tiktok, Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, Pinterest etc) and instantly populates all visually matching content onto a clean dashboard. This content can be sorted to display by platform or by media type (video, image, gif). The user can see the price and reviews of the product (if applicable) right by the media. The user can also click on each displayed product to be taken to the source for further product research.
How we built it
We used Javascript for the main functionality of the web app. We also integrated as many APIs as possible for the minimum viable product. We used Cloud Vision API to scan the product page and retrieve matching data. (ONLY SUGGESTED, I AM WRITING THIS A NOOB WITH BACKEND STUFF)
Challenges we ran into
Finding a cost-effective mechanism to retrieve visually matching content. The API's were quite costly when taking into consideration how often each consumer would be scanning products with our app. (THIS IS ALSO JUST RAMBLING, MAY NOT EVEN BE TRUE)
Also gaining access to many public platform API's was challenging, and we had to work with the ones that provide public access for our MVP initially to gain proof of concept. (WE CAN HACK OTHER API'S IF NEED BE NOTHING'S STOPPING US!)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Providing the ever-growing online shopper market with quick and valuable solutions when it comes to finding the best quality, best-priced, and most trustable products in a time of growing uncertainty with millions of new companies entering online retail.
What we learned
Scraping data from across the web requires a lot of patience and perseverance.
Visual scanning technology as it currently is has a lot of room for improvement for more accurate results.
What's next for YangKoch ShopMatcher
Integrating AI and Augmented/Virtual Reality into the extension to continuously elevate the shopping experience for online shoppers across the globe. Imagine a shopper scanning a product and entering a VR world where s/he can try out the product in 3D space and tell AI how to customize it in real time to his/her liking.
