Inspiration and what it does

We are thrilled to introduce Yalari, a groundbreaking tool that is the first and only web-based translator for Indigenous languages. It's alarming that 75% of Canada's Indigenous languages are dying or already endangered. Yalari's objective is to conserve and raise awareness of these languages by leveraging a community-driven strategy and database.

How we built it

We learned how to use Figma to design our user interface and we employed Canva and Photoshop to ensure a user-friendly experience. Our mastery of Premiere Pro was enhanced, which enabled us to produce a video pitch. We anticipate utilizing these software tools to help us effectively reach out to communities and organizations.

Challenges we ran into

Given that it was our first attempt at creating a UI, we initially developed an interface that was cluttered and disorganized. However, we persevered and refined our vision, striking a balance between simplicity and functionality. The resulting UI, while not flawless, represents a significant improvement over our initial attempt at the start of this hackathon.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Prior to this weekend, none of our team members had experience in UI design. However, through the use of Figma, we were able to create an ideal user interface for our solution. Yalari represents a significant step towards bridging this gap and promoting inclusivity between the Indigenous culture and the rest of the world. Over the course of the weekend, we were able to establish a solid foundation to address this need.

What we learned

During our brainstorming process, we identified several areas in the market where there are unmet needs that require our attention. While we ultimately chose to focus on one of these areas for our hackathon project, the experience broadened our understanding of the challenges faced by minority groups. As the hackathon comes to a close, we are even more motivated to explore these gaps and leverage technology to help create a more inclusive world.

What's next for Yalari

Yalari has the potential to serve as a valuable tool in schools to aid in the instruction of Indigenous languages, as well as for personal use to facilitate learning, sharing knowledge, and connecting with others. Yalari caters to all individuals interested in learning about and supporting Indigenous communities, including students, allies, supporters, translators, and tourists.

Closing statements

Yalari's ultimate objective is to promote sustainability and inclusivity by preserving and promoting Indigenous languages, supporting cultural diversity, and facilitating communication between cultures. By leveraging technology to preserve endangered Indigenous languages, we can work towards creating a more equitable, sustainable, and inclusive world.
