From the Ocean to Innovation — My Journey with Yaad Sentinel
Startup Challenge Entry – By Joshua Black
👋 Introduction
My name is Joshua Black and I’m from Jamaica. I am by no stretch of the imagination a professional coder. In fact, my first job was as an animal trainer working with stingrays, sharks, and dolphins at Dolphin Cove. Later, I became a scuba diving instructor, a role I held for over 10 years.
I’ve always had a passion for creating things—things that are beautiful and useful. I believe that’s where my inspiration for building apps came from.
🌟 Inspiration
About six months ago, I discovered Bolt. That discovery changed everything.
I realized I could make software and create real solutions without spending years in college. That moment completely shifted how I saw the world around me.
Jamaica is a beautiful place—but in terms of technology, we’re far behind. We still:
- Write in books to record important information
- Wait in long lines to pay bills
- Rely heavily on manual processes
Aside from tourism, real estate is one of our fastest-growing sectors. But every time I need to visit someone in a gated community, I experience the same frustrating process:
- No one knows I’m coming
- The guard searches for a pen and dry page in a soggy book
- My name and license plate are written manually—if the pen works
That’s when I saw the opportunity. With the tools Bolt gave me, I could push Jamaica one step closer to a tech-driven future.
This is not just a personal problem—it’s an island-wide problem. There are hundreds, maybe thousands of gated communities and villas across Jamaica that could benefit from automation.
🛠️ How I Built It
Once I got into Bolt, I was hooked.
I’ve been using it almost every single day. It became addictive—in a good way. You can think of something, type it, and it comes to life. You can dream about an app, and Bolt helps you build it.
I spent late nights and early mornings:
- Running prompts
- Reading and analyzing the AI-generated code
- Asking questions like:
- How do I set up push notifications?
- How do I integrate with OneSignal?
- How do I configure app IDs for mobile builds?
- How do I set up push notifications?
And I built it all using Bolt—from design to deployment.
In the process, I even learned real coding principles just by observing the generated code and asking Bolt how things work.
⚠️ Challenges I Faced
My biggest challenge was understanding mobile dependencies.
Many features—like push notifications—don’t work in the browser preview. So, I had to learn how to:
- Build and test the app on a real device
- Debug native features like iOS push support
- Read error logs and solve dependency issues
Sometimes, the app would work perfectly in the browser but fail on a phone. This back-and-forth taught me a lot about mobile architecture, and even pushed me to learn some traditional code and use Google to troubleshoot.
But with Bolt by my side, I always had help.
🏆 Accomplishments I'm Proud Of
Honestly, I’m proud of just building the app.
When I started, I had no idea how to code. Now, just 5–6 months later, I have an app:
- Running on my iPhone
- Shared with friends through TestFlight
- Solving a real problem I’ve experienced myself
The ability to say, “Hey, download this app I built” is something I never thought I’d be able to say. But here I am.
🚀 What’s Next for Yaad Sentinel
The next step is getting Yaad Sentinel into real communities.
I want to introduce this tool to villas and gated properties where managers can:
- Monitor entries and exits remotely
- Automate guard patrols and reports
- Reduce the manual workload of security teams
- Improve the experience for every visitor
My goal is to monetize the app and also create jobs in an economy that desperately needs opportunities beyond tourism. I want to show that Jamaicans can build tech, too—and that innovation doesn’t only happen in Silicon Valley.
❤️ Final Words
Bolt has changed my life.
I came in with no experience, and now I’m building software that could help thousands. I’m excited to keep growing, keep learning, and keep creating.
