Inspiration
International money transfers seem simple, but many users don’t realize how much they lose through hidden FX spreads, fees, and delays. As someone familiar with cross-border payments, I wanted to build a that makes these costs transparent instead of buried in fine print.
What it does
Smart-FX helps users find the cheapest and fastest way to move money internationally. It compares live FX rates, provider fees, and transfer speed across major remittance services and bank wires. The app also simulates real bank balance impact using Capital One’s Nessie API and provides short-term FX risk signals (not predictions) to support better timing decisions.
How I built it
-Frontend: React with a Figma-first design focused on clarity, whitespace, and trust -FX Data: Live mid-market exchange rates combined with provider-specific rate and fee logic -Capital One Nessie: Mock bank accounts used to simulate before-and-after balances -Quant Signals: Risk scores based on historical FX returns and volatility across multiple time horizons -Deployment: Web-based app optimized for fast demos
Challenges I ran into
-Ensuring correct currency conversion in both directions (USD → foreign and foreign → USD) -Keeping FX math accurate and consistent across providers -Designing risk signals that inform users without giving financial advice -Balancing technical depth with a clean, intuitive UX under time constraints
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
-Built an end-to-end fintech tool with real-time FX comparisons -Integrated Capital One’s Nessie API to show real balance impact -Designed a calm, premium UI for complex financial decisions -Delivered explainable quant signals instead of black-box predictions
What I learned
I learned that in fintech, clarity is just as important as functionality. FX spreads often matter more than visible fees, and presenting this information clearly builds trust. I also gained experience working with sponsor APIs and responsible financial design.
What's next for Smart-FX
Next steps include expanding provider coverage, supporting more currency corridors, improving FX timing insights, and adding compliance-aware logic for institutional and education-related transfers.
