Inspiration

As a medical student, I was initially overwhelmed by ECG training. The process involved memorizing patterns from textbooks, which I found uninspiring. I longed for a tool that would show me what actually happens in the heart, rather than just learning patterns by rote. This desire inspired me to embark on a challenging journey to create something more intuitive.

What it does

This app presents a journey through one of the deadliest heart attacks, revealing the mechanics behind the scenes. It demonstrates how an ECG, a simple yet life-saving tool, can be used to save lives. However, it's not just the tool, but the person using it that makes the difference. This experience aims to bridge the gap between textbook descriptions and real human physiology, in a general public friendly manner .

How we built it

This experience was developed using Unity with the Meta SDK v64. The 3D models were sculpted in ZBrush and textured using Substance Painter. Other resources included international medical literature and scientific references.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was condensing the complex details of the human body and diseases into an engaging and accessible format. Ensuring anatomical accuracy in the immersive experience was particularly demanding.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am most proud of being the first to witness this unique experience—an aspiration of mine for years. Seeing the heart in action while holding an ECG in my hands was previously impossible. I am deeply grateful to the everyone responsible for developing the hardware and all the tools that powers this project. Their hard work and dedication made this possible.

What we learned

During this journey, I learned that there is a lot of adversity and challenges along the way but if the end goal is something amazing then we have all the reasons not to give up.

What's next

Our next step is to integrate more medical concepts into the metaverse with unprecedented clarity. There's still much to do, more challenges to overcome, and a wealth of content to bring to life using mixed reality. The opportunity to visualize complex medical ideas right before your eyes is truly invaluable.
