Inspiration

Day by day food goes to waste, about 325 pounds of food waste per person is wasted annually. Just how much of it could've been prevented with better information on when things expire? How much of it could've been prevented because, although it's stale, it could still be used.

What it does

Xpire Scan records information by scanning receipts and or via manual text inputs. With this information, an AI model finds an appropriate a expiration date, where to store an item, and whether or not it can find second life in a different recipe.

How we built it

We used Agentic coding to find out how to build our program from scratch using OCR to detect text, and Deepseek AI to process the string of text, and to determine appropriate expiration dates and use cases.

Challenges we ran into

One issue we came into was during Agentic coding, when the model we had used had accidentally deleted a crucial feature to the operation of our program. Because of this, we had to restart some of our building as the agent was unable to restore the program to a previous version, which was particularly problematic because we had forgotten to save before making such edits with our model.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

That we managed to come here with little experience in agentic coding and ended with a meaningful & concrete solution to our problem.

What we learned

We learned today many helpful practices that expand our horizons in regards to agentic coding, as our overreliance on practices from hard coding had made us foreign to the language and practices of agentic coding. We've learned that when we come to new issues and new processes, that we must be ready to learn about the practices of this new practice. Such that, when in Rome, make like the Romans.

What's next for Xpire Scan

We plan to properly to integrate Xpire Scan into Apple ecosystems instead of just a web interface, additionally we would like to add analytics to help promote better shopping habits amongst consumers.
