Inspiration

Traditional IELTS preparation often feels like an exhausting marathon—overwhelming and easy to quit. I was inspired by habit-forming platforms like Duolingo to build XLR8, a solution that treats prep like a sprint. The goal was to prove that 5 minutes of consistent daily practice is more effective for long-term retention than 5 hours of sporadic cramming

What it does

  1. XLR8 is a micro-learning platform that transforms the IELTS journey into a game. It features:
  2. Micro-Sprints: Users choose between 2-minute "Quick Bursts," 5-minute daily practices, or 10-minute "Deep Dives."
  3. Engagement Mechanics: A swipe-based question interface provides instant feedback, while streak tracking and "Streak Freezes" encourage daily consistency. Competitive Progression: A tiered League system (Bronze → Silver → Gold → Diamond) and visual milestone badges reward long-term momentum.

How I built it

I built XLR8 as a high-performance Single Page Application (SPA) with a focus on speed: Frontend: Developed using Vanilla JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3 to minimize overhead. State & Routing: I engineered a custom state manager using localStorage for persistence and a custom SPA router for seamless navigation. Backend: Powered by MySQL to manage user profiles, streak history, and league data. Tooling: Utilized Vite for a modern, rapid development workflow.

Challenges I ran into

Vanilla State Management: Managing complex, reactive user data—like real-time league standings—without a framework required building a very structured and reliable custom state system. Interactive UI Logic: Implementing the smooth, touch-responsive swipe interface for the practice sessions using purely Vanilla JS and CSS was a challenge in event handling and animation performance. Database Integration: Designing the MySQL schema to handle the "Momentum Score" and streak logic required careful planning to ensure the data stayed synchronized across sessions.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Framework-less SPA: Successfully building a fully functional, routed application with robust state management using zero external UI frameworks. The Momentum Engine: Creating a logic system that accurately tracks and rewards consistency, making the learning process feel genuinely rewarding. Performance: Achieving near-instant load times and smooth transitions by keeping the codebase lightweight and optimized.

What I learned

Core Fundamentals: Building the project from scratch significantly deepened my understanding of the DOM, browser history APIs, and how modern frameworks handle state under the hood. Engagement Design: I learned how to integrate psychological triggers—like streaks and badges—to improve user retention and educational outcomes. Full-Stack Coordination: I gained experience in bridging a custom-built JS frontend with a structured MySQL backend.

What's next for XLR8-PREP FOR IELTS

AI-Powered Feedback: Integrating an LLM to provide instant, personalized corrections on writing and speaking tasks. Social Sprints: Adding a "Head-to-Head" mode where users can compete in real-time speed sessions. Mobile App Release: Expanding the platform into a native mobile experience to make micro-learning even more accessible on the go.
