Xcess.id

Save the food, save your pockets

Problem Statement
In Indonesia, over 48 million tonnes of food are unnecessarily thrown out each year. Yet, 38% of Indonesians lack access to basic nutritional necessities. Our team sees this as an immense waste, but with it, an opportunity to rectify both issues.

Our Product
Xcess.id is an e-commerce platform that serves as an intermediary between consumers and food producers. Through our virtual marketplace, grocery stores, restaurants, and other food vendors can sell their excess food products, and consumers can purchase them for a nice discount from their usual price. It’s a win-win!

Technical Overview

Tech Stack
Given the limited development timeframe of this hackathon (24 hours), our team opted to design, code, and implement our minimum viable product (MVP) in HTML, CSS, and Javascript. In addition, our team utilised publicly available resources in the Xcess.id prototype, such as Bootstrap, jQuery, and Google Fonts.

Development Process
Upon the ideation of Xcess.id, development began with the design phase. Our team modelled the UI/UX, user flow, and product image in Figma. We then proceeded to prototype our design in code, resulting in the current state of our product’s development. The next stages of development, which require a broader timeframe, involve the design and creation of a robust backend framework (possibly Django or Node.js), as well as a mobile application port for our platform (Swift and/or Kotlin).

Team Dynamics

Milestones
While the development of a project is bound to have many vital checkpoints, our team believes that the most impactful milestone (which need not be the most important one) was successfully debugging the navigation bar. The prototype initially faced various issues with having the navigation bar shift positions, change in size, lead to broken links, and a number of other small, but admittedly frustrating problems. Resolving this issue was one of the first milestones to having a functional and stylistically coherent prototype.

Collaboration
Our team constantly communicated the various tasks and roles of each developer, and collaboratively developed the Xcess.id prototype with the aid of the git and github.
