The worldwide corona crisis has increased the demand for hygiene products and ideas in this area. Medical staff as well as patients, students and schoolchildren should be given optimal hygienic support

The problem our project solves

The challenge our team wanted to tackle refers to categories of Protective Equipment and Protection of Medical Personnel within EUvsVirus Hackaton. Proper hand hygiene is the best way to prevent Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). According to the WHO, the compliance with hand hygiene guidelines is less than 50% globally and about 5 to 8 million lives could be saved every year, if the healthcare professionals were to clean their hands properly.

Our solution – WUH Smart Soap Dispencer

WUH, is to become an intelligent soap dispenser that is able to observe the person's hands and determine if the correct washing steps are followed. A display shows the person how to wash their hands and a camera checks if the steps are followed (Machine Learning, Image Recognition). In this way hygiene in public buildings but also at home can be improved.

The aim is to build a small soap dispenser with its own power supply that can be placed wherever it is needed. Let's gameficate the hand washing!

Technical Details: Generally accessible and inexpensive electronic parts were used Minimalistic JAVA and Python Code Base Easy to assemble Device Tensorflow Powered AI Hardware: Raspberry PI Zero, Adafruit LCD Display, IR Sensor, perestaltic pump, Webcam, 3D printer Software: Raspbian OS, JAVA (openjdk-8), Python3

This project was concieved by Pros: Our team consists of 3 medical specialists, 3 IT developers, 2 hardware developers and a statistician

The solution’s impact to the crisis

Proper hand hygeine is cheap and efficient way to prevent yourself and others from the getting the infection, especially the respiratory viruses like coronavirus. In the period of crisis, our device will allow to ensure proper hand washing steps are followed, which will improve the hygeine in the hospitals and public places and potentially save more lives. Basically, WUH remind you to wash your hands & helps to wash it properly! From Coronavirus global health emergency – IMO issues advice to the Member States, seafarers, and the shipping industry

The necessities in order to continue the project

  1. We need financial help with the purchase of a 3D printer
  2. A further development of the hardware design to protect the device from external influences
  3. In order to be able to pass on the device cheaply at a reasonable price, we would have to talk to hardware manufacturers

The value of our solution after the crisis

Our device will also be useful for proper handwashing even after crisis resolves:

  • WUH may contain soap or disinfectant, it can be used in regions with water problems.
  • Reduces the spread of multiresistant bacteria in the future.
  • Teaches children and young people proper hand hygiene in kindergartens and schools.
  • Can serve as an entry control into the hospital - increases patient safety
  • There will continue to be bacterial and virological threats in the future - our approach is very sustainable
