Inspiration
We took a large amount of inspiration from the bright and colorful atmosphere of Wegman's and our own experiences of working in grocery stores. From those thoughts, we created Wugman's, something that we hope illustrates the fun of working at somewhere like Wegman's but also the danger of COVID-19 to front line workers.
What it does
The player works in the game to collect items for online pick ups from customers. The game builds in intensity, with an increasing shopping list and shortening time until the last stage, Christmas (every retail worker's nightmare).
How we built it and what we learned
Our team is composed of two freshman from RIT (who also happen to both be newbies to the Hackathon scene). We made the game using Unity (C#), and Aseprite, a program used for pixel art. This was a huge learning experience for both of us, not only because this was our first time in a Hackathon but also because, as freshman, our skills were at a relatively low baseline but we still pushed to create something at a higher level. Working on Wugman's not only taught us a greater time discipline, but greatly improved our skills with C# and UI design.
Challenges we ran into and accomplishments that we're proud of
A problem that caused us a bit of time and trouble was trying to create a UX that felt intuitive and brought a good energy to the game; we also had difficulties with 2DPhysics and colliders that reacted upon proximity and could be used to retrieve information and trigger actions. Overall, I am quite pleased with our end result-- the game is natural and easy to understand, and posses a positive vibe that conveys the florescent color of a Wegman's.

What's next for Wugman's
Ideally, we'd like to further develop this game and publish it somewhere that it can be widely played!
