Inspiration
As much as we all love the cinema, it's often hard finding new movies to enjoy. Many of us try browsing the web to discover the next film to watch, but to no avail.
I built WTFilms to solve this very problem.
What it does
WTFilms guides you through a collection of popular films to learn your interests.
At the same time, it's generating a personal digest of movies to watch that can further be marked as watched/disliked.
How I built it
By combining IMDb's vast dataset of films with Amazon's Personalize recommendation engine, I was able to build an app capable of entertaining its users to the fullest extent.
Challenges I ran into
It was hard figuring out the right format for displaying film proposals, all while offering a way to like/dislike them. Thankfully, after many prototypes, I arrived at a solution.
What I learned
It was shocking how easy it is building a recommendation engine with Amazon Personalize, and feeding it data through the AWS Data Exchange IMDb dataset. I will definitely be using it again for my future projects.
What's next for WTfilms
After this hackathon ends, I plan on ending various features to my app:
- Conversations.
- Linking related videos from YouTube.
and much more...
