Inspiration

I’m currently going through Topical Steroid Withdrawal myself, and 2–3 years ago I began experimenting with AI as a distraction from the worst symptoms. It eventually transformed my career. When the International Topical Steroid Withdrawal Organization saw the AI artwork I’d been making about my own experience, they approached me to create an impactful social film that people with TSW could share to show others what this condition actually feels like. This project is a full‑circle moment.

What it does

The film uses bold visual metaphor to communicate the “skin on fire” feeling that so many TSW warriors describe. It’s designed for social media - short, visceral, instantly understandable - so even people who’ve never heard of TSW can finally grasp the reality of it.

How we built it

I used mostly Veo 3 to create the shots, Runway Aleph to give additional shots and vary the ones I had, Suno for the music and edited on Capcut.

Challenges we ran into

Most AI tools block literal “skin on fire” imagery for safety reasons, yet that sensation is central to the TSW experience. I had to find a safe but powerful alternative — molten lava — which ultimately became a more effective metaphor than flames.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a striking, emotionally accurate piece that the TSW community immediately resonates with. It gives people a tool to finally say: “This is what it feels like.”

What we learned

That AI, when guided by lived experience, can communicate complex emotions quickly and truthfully - and can elevate stories that are often overlooked or dismissed.

What's next for WTF is TSW?

We plan to release the film as part of a global awareness campaign, creating shorter platform‑specific versions that TSW sufferers can share with family, friends and medical professionals to drive understanding and recognition.
