As labyrinthine hospitals, malls, office buildings, and schools continue to increase in indoor area to accommodate the growing population, the antiquated paper map struggles to adapt to the new floor plans while maintaining its effectiveness and ease of use. To combat this issue, a software shell for an original iOS mobile application acts as a tool to match any location’s needs and wants for an indoor navigation system, using a local high school as the first model.
W.T. Woodson, the most-visited and largest-campus in Fairfax County, was the perfect location to implement the program, needing a new map system to counter its 9-year-old paper map. The project began with taking panoramas of hallway intersections, capturing photos of points of interest, and transposing the current map with a clean, digital version. After, the program was written in the Swift and Objective-C languages on the Xcode developing platform to design and implement features into the application, including 360° panoramas of hallway intersections, descriptions of points of interest, classroom-search, self-locate, simulated paths, and more. A pathfinding algorithm was custom made for the program and serves as a vital component of the mobile application’s ease of use. In addition, the application upholds stringent security measures to comply with county and state regulations including IP verification, GPS referencing, passkey encryption, and image caching from a private server.
With Woodson acting as an example, the program can effectively conform to the needs of any client while preserving an intuitive user interface - revolutionary to indoor navigation.
The Woodson iMap is both fully functional and award winning! - 1st Place in Software Systems at the Fairfax County 2018 Regional Science and Engineering Fair - The Volgenau School of Engineering at George Mason University's 2018 Outstanding Computer Science Award.
Due to state and county law, we are unable to provide a demo the app, screenshots, or source code.
