Inspiration

WriteRight was born from our teammates' observations while working with students who have dyslexia and those from underprivileged backgrounds. We identified a critical gap in language learning: students struggled with character recognition and writing due to two key issues—lack of real-time error correction and no systematic way to track and practice their mistakes. This led to repeated errors and growing frustration, hindering their progress.

What it does

WriteRight is an all-in-one AI-powered Chinese learning platform designed to help students, especially those with dyslexia, master character recognition and handwriting. The app features a gamified interface with an ocean theme, as shown with the dolphin icons. It includes a scanning tool to digitize handwritten homework, followed by a typo-checking feature that highlights errors and provides audio-assisted feedback and word formation explanations

How we built it

WriteRight was developed using a combination of Flutter for the frontend, which enabled a responsive and engaging mobile interface with its underwater adventure theme, featuring elements like dolphins and turtles as seen in the app screenshots. The backend was powered by Python, leveraging its robust libraries for AI-driven features such as handwriting recognition and typo detection.

What's next for WriteRight

Looking ahead for WriteRight, our primary focus is to enhance the handwritten error detection system, as its current performance has not met our expectations, often struggling with varied handwriting styles and stroke accuracy as seen in the app’s scanning interface with dolphins. We plan to refine the AI algorithms, leveraging more diverse training data and advanced machine learning techniques to improve recognition rates, ensuring the "Check Scanned Typos" feature provides precise feedback for characters like those shown in the typo correction grid.
